Benchmarking for Facility

Introduction

To make social and environmental improvements in the apparel, footwear, and textile industry, we must compare year over year performance and track progress. The Higg Index benchmarks impacts to promote improving sustainability performance over time. Organizations can use the Higg Index to establish a point of reference across social and environmental impact areas from which future measurements may be made.

Higg FEM Benchmarking

The Higg.org platform currently offers benchmarking for the Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM). Facility and brand account holders may access this feature. Benchmarking for the Higg Facility Social & Labor Module (Higg FSLM) is not yet available.

The Higg FEM benchmarking feature on Higg.org currently includes the following:

  • Industry benchmarking
  • Energy, water, and waste sections charts

Who can use the benchmarking feature on Higg.org?

Facilities

Use the benchmarking feature to compare your own Higg FEM or shared Higg FEM self-assessments and verified assessments with other similar facilities in the industry.

Brands and other (sourcing agent/vendor) users

Compare Higg FEM self-assessments and verified assessments shared with you to other similar facilities in the industry.

How to Use Higg FEM Benchmarking on Higg.org

  • Facilities who have posted FEM 2019/FEM 2018/FEM 2017.
  • All modules are FEM 2019 posted. The FEM 2017 and FEM 2018 including verified FEM modules were posted by July 5, 2019.
  • Facilities who post FEM 2019 before or after August 142020 will be able to compare the FEM 2019 with the industry data.

Industry Benchmarking

Benchmarking navigation guidance:

1. Industry benchmarking guidance

  1. Overview: on the left side, there is a navigation bar with single selection and multiple selection conditions. Two rules for the conditions:
    • The more conditions you select, the smaller scope of facilities you will compare with.
    • After you choose a condition, if there is no related data reflected for levels achieved and aggregated totals data sections at the right side, it means that this condition is not applied for “my modules” or “shared modules” or all modules. For example, the facility is a yard facility and comparing “My Modules” with other similar facilities. After choose “Apparel” as the industry sector, it will be no “My modules” data appeared at the right side.

2) Single selection condition:

  • My Modules/Shared with Me:
    • My Modules: choosing it, to compare your modules with all similar facilities in the industry.
    • Shared with Me: choosing it, to compare the shared modules with all similar facilities in the industry.
  • Module Type:
    • FEM 2017: choosing it, you will compare FEM 2017 modules with all FEM 2017 modules including vFEM 2017 in the industry.
    • FEM 2018: choosing it, you will compare FEM 2018 modules with all FEM 2018 modules including vFEM 2017 in the industry.
    • FEM 2019: choosing it, you will compare FEM 2019 modules with all FEM 2019 modules including vFEM 2019 in the industry.
  • Verification Status:
    • FEM: choosing it, you will compare FEM self-assessment modules with all FEM self-assessments modules including FEM 2017/FEM 2018/FEM 2019 in the industry.
    • vFEM: choosing it, you will compare verified FEM modules including with all verified FEM modules including FEM 2017/FEM 2018/FEM 2019 in the industry.

3) Multiple selection condition: the information in the benchmarking database is input by the facilities from the Site Information & Permit section of FEM.

  • Country: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that country.
  • Industry sector: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that industry.
  • Facility type: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that type.
  • Facility annual product volume: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that range of annual product volume.
  • Facility process: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that facility process.
  • Employee count: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that range of employee count.
  • Material type: choosing it, you will compare with the facilities in that material type.

4) Levels achieved: Based on the conditions you have selected on the left side bar, it will show each section’s levels achieved data for “my modules” or “shared modules”, comparing with the all modules’ average levels achieved under those conditions.

5) Aggregated totals data: Based on the conditions you have selected on the left side bar, it will show total and each section’s score for “my modules” or “shared modules”, comparing with the all modules’ aggregated data under those conditions.

  • In our platform, we use “box and whiskers plot” to show the data. It shows the distribution and variability of scores as well as the total range.
    • The box is the thick part and the white line is the median. That means that 25%-50% is in the lower part of the box, and 50%-75% is in the top part of the box.
    • Then, 0=25% is between the small line and where the box ends on the lower part, and 75%-100% is between the top of the thick bar to the top of the small line.

Energy, Water and Wastes Sections Charts

  1. There are 3 sections which requires users to report their annual data of the sources in FEM. They are energy, water and wastes sections. The benchmarking feature allows you to compare the annual datawhich “my modules” or “shared modules” have reported for the sources in these 3 sections with all modules under the conditions you have selected.
  2. The sources of each section: each source chart will list the name, module type, band in the chart and annual value of “my modules” or “shared modules”.
    • Energy: non-renewable energy, renewable energy and carbon emission.
    • Waste: non-hazardous waste and hazardous waste
    • Water: water withdrawal and water recycling

Facility Benchmarking Examples

For facility users access:

  1. Login to your account and go to the FEM homepage dashboard.
  2. Click “Benchmarking”
  3. Choose “My Modules” option on the top.
  4. My Modules benchmarking example:
    • Conditions selected: Comparing my FEM 2019 self-assessment modules with all facilities who have FEM 2019 and are in printing and dyeing in Honduras and Chile in apparel industry.
    • Under these conditions, you only have one FEM 2018 to compare with total 250 modules.
  • Levels achieved
    • My modules: one module – my FEM 2019 in pink area. You can click the “All Modules” line to see my modules levels achievement only.

Levels achieved:

  • EMS level 2, Energy level 1, Water level 3, Waste level 1 and Wastewater, Air and Chemicals all level 0 (not even achieve level 1)
  • All modules: total 250 FEM 2019 under the selected conditions in blue area. You can click the “My Modules” line to see all modules levels achievement only.
    Levels achieved: average levels achieved
    • EMS level 1.28, Energy level 1.15, Water level 1.54, Waste level 0.9, Wastewater level 1.64, Air level 1.24, Chemical level 0.38.
  • Score comparing
    • My module scores: total score and each section’s score
      • Total score: 53.62. Since my total score has only one score, the value of lower, upper, bottom quartile, top quartile and median will be the same data.
      • Same rule as each section’s score.
  • All modules scores: total score and each section’s score

Total score of all modules:

    • Lower: 0, which means the lowest of total score for all modules in the conditions you have selected is 0. It is normal because some facilities might just purchase the FEM 2019 and haven’t started yet.
    • Upper: 99.2, which means that the highest of total score for all modules in the conditions you have selected is 99.2.
    • Bottom Quartile: 25% of all modules scored 25.36 or lower.
    • Top Quartile: 75% of all modules scored below 74.96.
    • Median: 50% of all modules score 50.72 or lower than this.
  • Same rule as each section’s score.
  • Analysis conclusion:
    • My FEM 2019 self-assessment levels achieved performance is higher than the similar facility modules under selected conditions in EMS, Water, Waste sections but lower in Energy, Wastewater, Air and Chemical sections, especially in the last 3 sections.
    • My FEM 2019 self-assessment score is higher than more than 50% of similar facility modules.

  • Energy, water and waste sections charts
    Use water withdrawal in water use section as the example:
    • My only FEM 2019 module and 222 all modules under the selected conditions have reported annual water withdrawal data.
    • Total 20 bands for the value range. My module falls into the 18th My module is listed below with my facility name, module type, band number and value.
    • My FEM 2019 self-assessment module annual water withdrawal value is actually pretty high in comparing with all modules because it falls into the 18th band of value. However, in the band 18th, my module value is much lower comparing with other modules in that range.
