1. Registration

What is Higg.org?

Higg.org is the online platform where the Higg Index suits of tools are located. Currently, Higg facility tools – Facility Environment Module (FEM) and Facility Social Labor Module (FSLM) are on this platform. Brand module is not available in Higg.org yet. Product tools are located in another platform – product.higg.org

Who can register on higg.org?

Manufacturers: SAC members and non-member manufacturers can register. All manufacturers will be able to purchase the FEM and FSLM once they have an account. Once they have completed and posted their modules, facilities can share them with brand partners or submit them for verification if they have purchased the vFEM or vFSLM (only available in certain locations). The 2019 FEM Module is available for purchase after September 2019. The FSLM Module is available to purchase on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Brands and retailers: Both SAC members and non-member SME brands can register. Brands and retailers can connect with manufacturer partners to share and request modules. These accounts cannot create facility modules but instead can connect with suppliers and request their facility modules from your account.

Verifying Bodies: SAC-approved verifying body companies can register at any time throughout the year, however they will only be able to access modules once the facilities hav selected them as their verifiers.

Other: Other groups such as governments, NGOs and academic institutions can create an account at any time, however this is only available to SAC members.

How long will it take for my new account and user profile be approved? How do I know if it has been approved or declined?

Your user profile does not need to be approved. Once created, you can log in with this profile right away. After logging in, you can create your facility account and you will be able to access and navigate your account immediately without waiting. Then Higg Index support team will review your account information. Your account might be declined and deactivated if it does not meet our requirement. You will receive a notification email if your account is approved or declined.

What if I need to register for numerous facility accounts?

Once you have created your first account, you can add other accounts in the drop down menu under your name through the ‘Add Account’ button. From there you are able register each facility, and access them in the menu under your name after the new accounts are approved.

What if I had an existing Higg account for the 2018 cycle?

Your log-in information will be the same, and you can access your 2018 FEM scores and your 2019 FSLM as well as purchase your 2019 modules and begin working on them if you are a facility. As a brand, you can see the 2018 FEM and FSLM assessments that have been shared with you by facilities. You can start to request your facilities to share their FEM 2019 after they have the module in their account.

Why do I need to enter my business address?

For facilities, this allows us to understand the local laws and regulations, connect you with verifiers if you purchase a vFEM or vFSLM module, and track data across and within countries.

You must include at least the city and country of your business. This is a requirement for the data to be included in industry wide benchmarking.

How do I register a new facility that does not have Higg ID yet?

Higg ID is optional and not needed for registration.

What should I enter for “Account Name” in the registration form when I try to create my facility account in higg.org?

Each individual facility will be set up as a separate account. 1 factory = 1 account. Enter the full factory name in “Account name” in English (please don’t enter your account name in other languages) and make sure the factory name is listed the way it is recognized by your business partners. Please avoid acronyms/abbreviations or include the full name and the acronym/abbreviation.

My company already has an account, how can I access it?

If your company has an existing account, you can search their account name to request to join once you create a user account. You can also contact the account administrator and ask the admin to invite you to join.

If you try to create a new account for an existing company, it will be declined.

How do I know if I am a SAC member?

The definition of a SAC member is a company or organization that has a membership agreement with the SAC and pays annual dues for membership. More information on SAC membership can be found at http://apparelcoalition.org/join-us/ and a list of all members can be found at the bottom of this page

If a parent company (an owner of multiple facilities) is a SAC member, will their facilities have to purchase the modules?

No, the cost of modules is included in the parent company’s membership.

What if a factory works with 10 different vendors. How will you ensure they are not duplicated?

We are addressing this in a few ways:

1. There will be a facility account search in the registration form to search for existing facility accounts.

2. Higg support will be approving all account registrations, so if we see someone is trying to create a duplicate account we will decline the registration and point them to the existing account.

3. If you notice any accidental duplicate accounts in the system, please contact https://support.higg.org.

Do I need to become a member of SAC to use the Higg Index?

No, the Higg Index suite of tools are open to all. If you are not a SAC member facility, you will purchase the modules you would like to use through Higg.org

If you are a non-member SME brand, you can have your facilities purchase the modules and share their assessments with you.

Should I register my account as a vendor or a facility?

Each facility should have their own account. A vendor will register as a separate account and request to view their facility modules.

Brands have asked my facility to register, why?

Brands often request that their facility participate in the FEM. This is to benefit you and them! It allows you to provide one report to all your customers and helps avoid audit fatigue and redundant requests. This gives you greater opportunity to invest time and resources into action that drives continuous improvement for your facility.

Why was my account rejected?

There are many reasons why an account may be rejected. For example:

  • The account name is not entered in English. We only accept English account names because it is easily recognizable by business partners and stakeholders.
  • Account name is insufficient. You must enter your full company name.
  • Duplicated account. If your account already existed in our platform, you cannot register it again. To join an existing account you must contact your account administrator.
  • Duplicated user. If you are already registered for an account on Higg.org and try to register again for a different account you will be rejected. You may access other accounts by adding them to your original account directly. You do not need to submit a new account request.
  • Duplicated user. If you are already registered for an account on Higg.org and try to register again for a different account you will be rejected. You may access other accounts by adding them to your original account directly. You do not need to submit a new account request.
  • If your email address does not have a company domain you will be rejected. For example: @163.com, @qq.com, @gmail.com.

If you feel your account has been rejected unjustly, please reach out to us through https://support.higg.org.

2. Payment

How do I pay for my modules on higg.org?

Once the facility has created an account, they will be able to select which modules they would like to purchase and then be taken to a payment page. A detailed guide can be found here.

What forms of payment are accepted?

We accept credit cards, AliPay, and wire transfer. All these 3 types of payment give immediate access to the purchased modules. However, if you choose wire transfer payment, you will need to download the invoice and pay within 30 days. If we don’t receive your payment after you download the invoice for 30 days, your module will be deleted.

What is the cost of the modules? Are there bundles or discounts for purchasing more than one?

For the 2020 cycle, the module price is $198/module for a single module (FEM or FSLM or vFEM or vFSLM) and $396/bundle for FEM + FSLM or FEM +vFEM or FSLM + vFSLM.

I am a SAC member facility, do I have to buy the modules?

No. If you are a SAC member manufacturer, your annual SAC membership fee includes the cost of facility modules annual access fee. Once you log into your account after November 5th, your modules should be there. If they are not, please contact support.

When can facilities begin work on 2020 modules?

If facilities have purchased their modules during pre-sales purchasing, access will open with the beginning of the 2020 cycle on November 5th, 2020.

After that date, facilities will have access to their modules immediately after purchasing them through their higg.org account.

Is the facility fee a one-time payment or an annual subscription?

A facility pays once every year for the modules they would like to use. This does not carry over. This means that if you would like to participate next year, you will need to purchase module access again.

When will a facility need to pay again next year?

Each purchased modules if valid for the adoption cycle period. For the 2020 cycle, this is from November 2020 to April 2021. If you have purchased a module, you are able to complete it up until April 2021. After that there is an interim period for verifiers to work on vFEM and vFSLM modules, and then in late 2021 the next cycle will begin and facilities will need to purchase modules again.

As a brand, do I have to pay to see my facilities modules?

If you have the Basic service level, you will have to pay $198 per shared module to access it.

If you are Essentials or above, you have unlimited free module shares so you just have to accept the facility’s shared module. For more information on sharing and requesting modules, please see our guidance here.

What if my brand owns its facility, does the facility need to pay for modules?

If your brand is a SAC member and owns a facility, the facility won’t need to pay for the modules but the number of owned facilities who can get the free modules is limited. Please contact us directly through howtohigg.org/request to discuss.

If my brand wants to purchase facility modules for my facilities, can they pay for it from my brand account?

If your brand wants to purchase facility modules for your facilities, they can use the ‘purchase for other facility’ button to pay for the modules and send them to the facility accounts.

If my company owns multiple factories, will I need to pay for each facility account? For example, if I own five factories, do I pay five times?

Yes, each individual facility must have their own account and you must purchase the modules for each facility account.

You can do this individually or you with the bulk purchasing option, which allows you to pay for all facility modules in one transaction. The bulk purchasing option is available in Higg.org platform. You will need to click “Pay for Other Facilities” in your account and find the facilities you want to pay for.

Do you have to pay for access to HowtoHigg.org?

Facilities do not have to pay to access HowtoHigg.org. All the training materials on howtoHigg.org are free and accessible to everyone.

Can multiple accounts be paid with one payment through credit card or wire transfer?

Yes, the option of paying for multiple accounts (bulk purchasing) is available. You can pay with credit card, Alipay, or wire transfer.

Can the SAC/Higg Co create and send us an invoice or an official receipt?

Yes, we will provide an invoice or official receipt to the facility for any types of payment.

Why does SAC/Higg Co charge a transaction fee for wire transferring?

For the module cycle of 2020, we charge a $45 transaction fee for each wire transfer payment. This is because banks have increased the transaction fee for the SAC/Higg Co.

How can parent companies access their factories Higg data?

There are three options for a parent company to access their facilities data on the Higg platform.

  1. Join their facilities account as a user. For guidance on how to add a new user to an existing account, see our guidance here.
  2. Create a separate account for the parent company with Basic access, and pay per module share. For more about Basic account access, see guidance here.
  3. Create a separate account for the parent company with Essentials access or above, and get unlimited module shares as well as additional benefits such as the Adoption tool, Analytics tool and advanced support. For more about Essentials, Expanded, or Advanced, access see our guidance here.

How will refunds work?

Please see our refund policy and process here.

3. Module Page and Sharing or Requesting Module

How does module sharing work?

If you want to share your module with other accounts, you must request or share a module with that account. Manufacturers can share their modules directly with any account type and request to view modules from account types that have filled out a module. Brand and Other account types can request modules from facilities and manufacturers.

To access sharing, pick the module type you’d like to share (FEM or FSLM) and go to that tab. Then click on the “Modules” tab right below. This will take you to the module tracking and sharing page. You can click “Request a module” or “Share a module” depending on which action you’d like to take. Choose the module type/year you would like to request or share and search the account name or account ID or Higg ID to find the account. Once your share/request is accepted, the module will be shared between accounts. Please click here to get the full guidance.

* Depending on your service level, there may be a fee associated with receiving shared modules. Please find more information here.

What information is shown through sharing?

You will be able to view the shared module type, account name, module posting status, module completion rate, facility country, parent company, and module status for all shared modules. You can also have options to view the shared FEM or FSLM data online or view/export the data in the CSV/Excel file. Please click here to get the full guidance.

What if I do not want anyone to see my module?

The purpose of the Higg Index is to collectively share and improve performance on sustainability. Sharing performance is an important driver of improvement. However, if you don’t want anyone to view your module(s), you can choose either to not to post your module OR you can post your module but choose not to approve any connections with other accounts. If you do not post your module(s), you cannot benchmark your data.

Will everyone with a login to my account be able to manage sharing?

No, only the account owner and admins can manage sharing. Editors cannot manage sharing. If you need to update a user’s role please contact Higg Index Support team (howtohiggg.org/request).

If I had an existing FEM 2019, will my connections remain after purchasing a FEM 2020?

When a facility starts a new 2020 FEM module, they will get a pop up asking if they would like to “Roll forward” all previous module data and sharing connections to their new module. Please click here to get the full guidance.

How can we search for modules we would like to be shared with us?

You can go to either the FEM or FSLM tab, depending on which module you’re looking for, and click the “Modules” tab below. Click “Shared With Me” to search the modules which have been shared with you. You can search by facility name.

Can I request modules in bulk if I work with hundreds or thousands of facilities?

Yes, bulk sharing requests are available on the platform. You can go to “Modules” on the home page and then click “request a module” and you will then see an option to send a bulk sharing request. Please click here to get the full guidance.

Our account Admin asked me to share our module. Can the Admin grant the editor or verifiers permission to share?

No, admin can’t grant the editor or verifier permission to share unless their role is changed to admin. A verifier’s role cannot be changed to editor or admin.

Are connecting and sharing the same thing?

Connecting is now called sharing because it refers to sharing modules. Accounts are no longer “connected.” Instead, modules are “shared.” You can choose to share your module with other accounts each year. You will now have the option to share modules for specific years rather than sharing your entire module history with any account you have accepted.

Will scores be applicable for a longer period or yearly?

We recommend a yearly review. Currently, you can review the shared modules’ FEM score if the modules are posted. Just go to your module page and under the “Share with me” tab. Then you will see the “View Score” option.

When we ask our facilities to share their modules what level of detail will we see?

When a module is shared all the information in a module is available to view.

4. Modules

How long does it take to complete a module?

Module completion takes 3 to 6 weeks, on average. The SAC provides a 6-month completion timeline allowing sufficient time for module completion in any supported language.

Can I receive partial credit for in-progress work in my factory?

Yes. Several questions have “partial yes” answer options, which allows a facility to get credit for making progress. However, we did not allow for partial points where we were unable to objectively define what counts for “partial” achievement. This is to reduce the number of subjective decisions that are left up to verifiers. All expectations must be clearly defined for both facilities and verifiers to follow.

Will my work on Higg FEM/FSLM be saved?

Your module will automatically save your answers as you complete the questions. This is important to avoid losing work due to slow internet connections. But we also suggest that you choose a good internet condition when you are working on the modules online or uploading your modules.

Which Higg FEM sections have applicability tests?

Water, Wastewater, Air, and Chemicals have applicability tests:

  • Wastewater has 8 categories for various combinations of onsite/offsite treatment and domestic/industrial wastewater.
  • Water has 2 categories: heavy/high risk water users and light/low risk water users.
  • Air has 4 categories: no emissions to air, production emissions only, operation emissions only, and both operations and production emissions.
  • Chemical Management has 2 categories: use chemicals in production processes (e.g., leather tanning) and do not use chemicals in production processes (e.g., cut and sew).

What does it mean if a section is not applicable? Does it affect level and overall score?

Not all sections of the FEM are applicable to all facilities. If a section is not applicable, the facility will not have to fill out the questions in that section.

The facility receives a Level 1 with a score of 100. Level 2 and 3 are not open to complete as they are not relevant for the facility, and therefore a completion of Level 1 with all ‘yes’ or ‘partial yes’ answers is the full completion of the section.

What is the purpose of the suggested upload?

Suggested uploads reflect requirements for verification. The purpose of these suggestions is to prepare a factory for verification by suggesting supporting documents that will be requested.

What if two factories are located in the same place and have only one water meter for two factories? Can we have one account for two factories?

Factories should setup one account and complete one module per site.

Definition of Facility Site: A single functional unit of an organization or a combination of units situated at one locality under one ownership, which is geographically distinct from other units of the same organization. Sites may be part of the same organization or independent legal entities. The facility site is:

  • Responsible for the transformation of a raw material into finished apparel and footwear for consumption
  • An integral part along the apparel/footwear supply chain by providing and utilizing material for further processing
  • Manufacturing, assembling, dyeing and finishing of a material, component, product along the apparel/footwear supply chain
  • The facility in which a production or processing operation is taking place, or at which control or ownership of the raw material and products occurs.

Typical examples of activities at facility sites are:

  • Apparel: ginning, spinning, weaving/knitting, dyeing/printing, finishing, packaging, etc.
  • Footwear: cutting, embroidering, screen printing, lasting, buffing, curing, packaging, etc.

5. FEM

What is new for FEM 2020?

Please click here to learn the updates of FEM 2020.

What is the FEM 2020 cadence period?

The FEM 2020 cadence starts from November 5th, 2020 to April 30th, 2021. Within this period, facilities can unpost and repost their FEM 2020 with unlimited times. After this period, facilities will have only one chance to post their FEM 2020.

6. Facility Preview – Facilities

What is Facility Preview?

Facility Preview is a set of foundational questions that are intended to assess a facility’s basic environmental practices. Facility Preview enables quick assessment of a facility’s environmental sustainability readiness. The assessment consists primarily of the Level One questions in the Higg Facility Environmental Module (High FEM) assessment. Facility Preview is an entry point to the Higg Facility Tools.

How do I purchase Facility Preview?

Purchase the Higg FEM 2020, and then Facility Preview will be activated if your facility is added to a Preview-enabled cadence. There is no separate Facility Preview purchase option.

As a manufacturer group, how do I enable Facility Preview for my owned facilities?

You must be an Advanced service account to have access to Facility Preview. To create a Preview-enabled cadence, please see our guidance here or contact your Higg Customer Success Manager.

As a manufacturer group, why do I need to subscribe to the Advanced Adoption Service to enable Facility Preview for my owned facilities?

To enable Facility Preview, it is required to create the Facility Preview cadence in a brand’s adoption tool to invite facilities and brands need to work with Higg Co to manage the facilities and communications for this cadence. The level of work is within the scope of Advanced Account Service.

Can I submit only Facility Preview? Or do I have to complete both Facility Preview and the full Higg FEM?

Depending on the cadence the facility is in, they will have two options.

  1. Submit after completing Facility Preview: The facility is only required to complete the Facility Preview section. After reaching 100% completion in that section, they will be able to post without needing to complete the rest of the sections.
  2. Complete both Facility Preview and Higg FEM: The facility is required to complete Facility Preview in addition to the rest of the Higg FEM. They will complete the Preview section as they would each of the other sections in the FEM, and once they have reached 100% completion they can post the full assessment.

If a brand requests that a facility complete the full FEM, the answers to these questions will be automatically populated in the rest of the assessment.

As a facility, how do I access Facility Preview?

Once you have purchased the Higg FEM 2020 and been added to a Preview-enabled cadence, the Facility Preview section will automatically appear in your FEM 2020 assessment.

If I go to complete the full Higg FEM will I have to answer the same questions twice?

No, any questions that are answered in the Facility Preview section will automatically populate into the rest of the assessment.

Does roll forward work for Facility Preview?

Yes, any data that would roll forward from a completed FEM 2019 will also populate in any applicable questions in the Facility Preview section.

Is there an offline Excel tool available for Facility Preview?

Yes, the offline Excel functionality will include the Facility Preview section, if applicable for the facility.

Where did these questions come from?

The Facility Preview content is a set of questions that appear to all users of the FEM 2020 as well as new questions specific to Facility Preview. These questions which are scattered throughout the FEM 2020 will be grouped together in the new Facility Preview section which only nominated facilities will see. Although these RefIDs will appear in the Facility Preview for the nominated facilities, these RefIDs will also appear in their original location within the assessment.

For more information on the content of the Facility Preview section, please see our guidance here.

Why was Facility Preview created?

Facility Preview replaces a brand’s internal tools and standardizes evaluation criteria for facilities basic environmental data. Since Facility Preview is a basic assessment, it is a great onboarding tool for facilities that have never completed a larger assessment like FEM. The Facility Preview assessment data is also invaluable to brands as it allows them to do early evaluations of the new facilities and decide if they want to keep working with the facility.

How does Facility Preview differ from the Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM)?

Facility Preview offers an introductory step towards Higg FEM, speeding up the initial environmental sustainability assessment process. It features primarily Level One questions from the Higg FEM to capture a snapshot of facility environmental performance. By using Facility Preview, facilities new to the Higg Index can gradually become acquainted with the Higg Index as they prepare for the comprehensive Higg FEM assessment.

Facility Preview does not replace the Higg FEM assessment. Rather, it introduces facilities to the Higg Index, serving as an on-ramp to using the Higg FEM, and captures a snapshot of a facility’s environmental performance to be shared with brand and retail partners. Facility Preview does not offer scoring or a benchmarking feature. Facilities must use Higg FEM to learn Higg Index scores and access the Higg Index benchmarking feature.

How do I share my Facility Preview data with my brands or manufacturer parent company?

Once purchasing the FEM 2020, you can start to share your FEM 2020 with your brands or manufacturer parent company if you are invited to complete Facility Preview. Then you will need to complete Facility Preview section in the FEM 2020. You have 3 options to complete Facility Preview.

Option 1: complete and submit the Facility Preview only. Once you submit your Facility Preview data, your brands or manufacturer group parent company will be able to view your Facility Preview data online or in an exported CSV file.

Option 2: complete Facility Preview and FEM 2020 without submitting Facility Preview. Once you complete and post your FEM 2020 including Facility Preview, your brands or manufacturer group parent company will be able to view your Facility Preview and FEM 2020 data online or in an exported CSV file.

Option 3: complete Facility Preview and FEM 2020 with submitting Facility Preview. Once you complete and post your FEM 2020 and submit Facility Preview, your brands or manufacturer group parent company will be able to view your Facility Preview and FEM 2020 data online or in an exported CSV file.

You will need to check with your brands or manufacturer group parent company on the completion requirements before starting your module.

Can other brands or manufacturer group parent companies who don’t require Facility Preview see my Facility Preview data?

Yes, if you are required to share your FEM 2020 module with other brands/manufacturer group parent companies who don’t require Facility Preview, they will be able to view and access your Facility Preview data once you complete and post your FEM 2020 as well as only complete and submit Facility Preview.

It is a public platform. Members and nonmembers can access it for free.

Will there be training material I can use to train my colleagues or supply chain partners?

Yes, training presentation decks will be shared via HowtoHigg.org that anyone can access.

What if I run into technical issues when I start using the Higg.org platform?

The Higg.org platform has a “Support” button that connects users to the Higg Index Support team who can answer any technical support questions.

Will Approved Trainer training be in the same online format as Verifier Training?

Yes, these processes are aligned.

Is there SAC contact information available for facilities who have questions that are not answered in the FAQ doc?

Please go to www.HowtoHigg.org and click “Submit a Request” at the top of the page to submit a support request.

Does the SAC have a program to support a brand’s internal training program for employees or suppliers?

The SAC will provide the approved trainer program through a third party. Through this trainer program you can work with an approved, certified trainer.

Can brands become approved trainers?

We are specifying requirements that approved trainers need to follow. It is up to brands to curate their own services overall. The approved trainer title is intended for training providers that can provide services on an ongoing basis. Brands and facilities that are interested in going through the training will have this option. They can receive a certificate to certify this.
