Higg BRM Scoring System Guidance 2022

Higg BRM Scoring Overview

March 2020

General Description

Brands and retailers play a key role in the long-term success of sustainable practices and communicating the value of sustainable fashion to consumers globally. Consumers are also becoming increasingly interested in supporting brands and retailers that are socially and environmentally sustainable and transparent about these practices.

Businesses of all sizes can use the Higg Brand & Retail Module (Higg BRM) to measure the environmental and social impacts of their operations and make meaningful improvements. The Higg BRM also supports these Higg Index users in sharing sustainability information with key stakeholders, including supply chain partners.

Scoring Structure Overview

BRM has 8 applicability pathways that show users questions that are applicable for their business.

  • Brand: Company creates its own branded products
  • Retailer: Company purchases products from other companies to sell
  • Stores: Company has brick-and-mortar stores
  • Brand + Retailer
  • Brand + Stores
  • Retailer + Stores
  • Brand + Retailer + Stores
  • Operations & Logistics

Section Applicabilities

There are three sections that are shown or hidden based on each user’s answers to questions in the Company Profile section: Brand; Retailer; and Stores. All users see the Company Profile section (unscored), Management Systems; and Operations & Logistics.

Lifecycle Stage Applicabilities

In addition to each section, all questions are organized into lifecycle stages, some of which span multiple sections (for example, questions in the “Product” lifecycle span across both Brand and Retailer sections). The following tables indicate the lifecycle questions that are presented to each applicability.

Section Scoring

BRM produces a number of scores across a few perspectives. The first types of scores are Section scores. Each section has an Environment Score and a Social Score. Each question is equally weighted within its section. In addition to the two scores for each section, the user also receives a total Environment Score, and a total Social Score. Questions are equally weighted in the total scores as well.

Lifecycle Stage Scoring

Users also receive a score for each applicable lifecycle stage. These scores are not divided by Environment and Social subcategories- only one score is produced for each lifecycle stage. There is no total score for lifecycle stage scoring.

Scoring & Answer Options

Based on feedback from the previous Higg BRM Beta version, “partial yes” question answer options were provided for applicable questions. Companies and organizations of all sizes will have the partial yes option for certain questions, along with the option to upload an explanation of why they selected yes, partial yes, or no for each question in the module. For most answer options with partial yes, the answer scoring threshold is the following: Yes (76-100%), Partial Yes (26-75%), and No (0-25%).  In addition, the How to Higg guidance provides explanations of this where applicable. Please keep in mind that this is first online version of the Higg BRM and we welcome all feedback to improve scoring for future versions (feedback links are included at the end of each section of the Higg BRM).
